PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior middle
hitter Rebecca Stein (Kingston, N.Y.) was a force
at the net Saturday afternoon to lead Western Connecticut State
University to a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a
Little East Conference women's volleyball match at Foley Gymnasium.
WestConn took the opening set, 25-22, and PSU came back to even
things up with a 25-21 victory in the second set. The
Colonials put the match away with 26-24 and 25-20 triumphs in the
next two sets. Western improved to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in
conference play, while PSU slipped to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the
LEC.
Stein recorded 17 kills and eight blocks to lead the Colonials,
while sophomore Samantha Hathaway (Milford, Conn.) helped out with
42 assists. Freshman Kelsey Collins (Massapequa, N.Y.) led
the defense with 25 digs.
Junior Carly Newton (Centerville, Mass.) was the
top hitter for the Panthers with 12 kills, as Western limited PSU's
top hitter, junior Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.), to
just six kills and five attack errors. Senior libero Sarah
Spears (Meredith, N.H.) had a team-high 21 digs.
PSU returns to the court next weekend at the Johnson & Wales
Fall Classic in Providence, R.I. WestConn returns home to
host Wesleyan University Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
