TILTON,
N.H. - Sophomore Sean Buckley (Sagamore,
Mass.) and freshman Chris Zaremba (Colorado
Springs, Colo.) scored two goals apiece Friday night to lead
Plymouth State University to a 5-4 victory over Cortland State in a
non-conference men's ice hockey game played at The Tilton School.
Zaremba's
second goal was the game-winner, breaking a 4-4 tie with 6:44
remaining in the third period. Zaremba, who had one goal in
his first 12 games this season, has five goals in his last two
outings. Buckley doubled his season goal total as the
Panthers won their second straight game to improve to 5-8-1
overall.
Sophomore
defenseman Kyle Tobin (Kanata, Ont.) also scored a
goal and an assist for the Panthers, and sophomore Seth
McQuade (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Justin
Phenney (Brunswick, Ohio) picked up two assists apiece.
The outcome
spoiled a strong night for the Cortland line of sophomore Jarrett
Gold (East Setauket, N.Y.), junior Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor,
Mich.) and senior Mike Maier (Rochester, N.Y.), who combined to
score all four goals. Gold recorded two goals and two
assists, Palmisano had two goals and one assist, and Maier
collected three assists. Cortland dropped its fourth straight
game and fell to 5-9-1.
Gold and
Buckley traded goals in the opening five minutes of the first
period, with Buckley's tally coming while short-handed.
Palmisano scored with two second left in the frame to put the Red
Dragons up by one.
PSU outscored
Cortland 3-1 in the first six minutes of the second period, with
Buckley, Tobin and Zaremba finding the net for PSU, surrounding
Palmisano's second of the night for Cortland. Gold's second
of the game on a power play at 10:23 of the second tied the game at
4-4, and it stayed that way until Zaremba's game-winner at 13:16 of
the third.
The visitors
finished with a narrow 46-43 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman goalie Allen Schneider (Strongsville,
Ohio) earned the win for PSU with 42 saves, while senior Mike
Mistretta (Buffalo, N.Y.) turned aside 38 shots in the Cortland
net.
The two teams
will play again on Saturday at The Tilton School, with a 1:00 p.m.
opening face-off.
