N.H. - Freshman Justin Phenney
(Brunswick, Ohio) deflected home a shot from the point with just 45
seconds remaining in overtime Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State
University edged SUNY Cortland, 4-3, in a non-conference men's ice
hockey game at The Tilton School Arena.
The Panthers
completed the weekend sweep of the Red Dragons following Friday
night's 5-4 victory. PSU has won three straight games and is
3-0-1 in its last four, improving to 6-8-1 overall, while Cortland
dropped its fifth in a row and fell to 5-10-1.
PSU junior
Stephan Davis (Lafayette, Calif.) taliled the only
goal of the first period to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Cortland outscored the Panthers 3-1 in the second period, thanks to
a pair of goals by freshman Ryan Markell (Columbus, Ohio) and one
by sophomore Justin Porpora (Hauppauge, N.Y.). The Panther
goal in the period came off the stick of sophomore Bryan
Horrigan (Brookfield, Wis.), but PSU trailed by one
heading into the third period, 3-2.
Sophomore
Seth McQuade (Manchester, N.H.) scored the only
goal of the third frame, tying things up at 3-3 at the 6:45
mark. That ended up as all the scoring in regulation, sending
the Panthers into overtime for the third time in their last four
games.
Cortland was
whistled for a penalty late in overtime, and a PSU shot from the
point by sophomore Kyle Tobin (Kanata, Ont.) with
45 seconds left in the game went in the goal off of Phenney for the
game-winner.
Shots on goal
for the game were even at 40 apiece. PSU freshman
Allen Schneider (Strongsville, Ohio) recorded the
win with a 37-save effort, while freshman Mike Reilly (New York
City, N.Y.) took the loss despite making 36 stops.
PSU returns to
its home ice at Waterville Valley on Wednesday, hosting Southern
New Hampshire in an ECAC Northeast contest (6:00 p.m.).
Cortland returns to SUNYAC play next Saturday with a visit to
Oswego (7:00 p.m.)
