Box Score (Game Box)
DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman
Gary Robinson (Torrington, Conn.) and senior
Dashon Jennings (Bridgeport, Conn.) combined to
score 43 points Saturday afternoon to lead the Western Connecticut
State University men's basketball team to a 76-68 Little East
Conference victory over Plymouth State University at Feldman Arena.
WestConn evened the season series between the two schools at one
game apiece, as each team won on their home court. The
Colonials are now in fifth place in the LEC at 9-8 overall and 4-5
in conference play. The Panthers continues their trend of
alternating wins and losses, something they have done the past nine
games. PSU is now in fourth place at 8-11 overall and 5-4 in
league games.
Robinson contributed a game-high 22 points for WestConn on 8-of-12
shooting from the floor, while Jennings added 21 markers and
converted 8-of-12 attempts from the free-throw line. Jennings
is closing in on the coveted 1,000 point plateau with 956 points in
91 career games.
Junior Jason O'Keefe (Everett, Mass.) led the
Panthers with 22 points, and junior Mike Chergey
(Bow, N.H.) and senior Ben Huntington (Hampstead,
N.H.) added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Colonials thought the game was well out of reach of the
Panthers with 5:29 remaining. Freshman Daquan
Brooks (Bristol, Conn.) just canned a long three-pointer
to give WestConn an 18-point advantage, 65-47. Someone forgot
to tell the visitors to throw in the white towel.
PSU scored 19 of the games next 24 points and drew within four
points, 70-66 on a three-pointer by O'Keefe with 1:03 remaining in
the contest. During that stretch, WestConn could not take
advantage of 12 trips to the free-throw line as it missed nine of
the tries. The Colonials converted just 15 of 38 attempts
from the "not-so" charity stripe for the day.
A lay in by Robinson 14 seconds later ended the Colonials' drought
and built their lead back up to six points, 72-66. The
Colonials avenged a 91-76 loss to the Panthers on Dec. 13 in the
Granite State.
WestConn travels to Southern Vermont for a non-league meeting on
Tuesday (7:00 p.m.). PSU returns home to host Lyndon State on
Thursday in the annual Spirit Night contest at Foley Gymnasium
(7:30 p.m.)
