PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Kerry
D'Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) netted a goal with five minutes
to go in the first overtime Saturday afternoon to lift Plymouth
State University over Westfield State College, 1-0, in Little East
Conference field hockey action at Arold Field.
The Panthers improve to 4-3 in the LEC and 8-4 overall. The
Owls fall below the .500 mark to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the LEC.
The Panthers had the chance to get on the board first midway
through the first half when senior Courtney
Colligan (Brookfield, N.H.) received a pass from a penalty
corner and fired off a shot that was stopped by Owl goal keeper
Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, Mass.). WSC came marching back
with its own chance minutes later when sophomore Jessi Gould
(Canton, Mass) broke away and passed the ball in front of the goal,
just out of the reach of fellow teammate Amanda Burns (Hillsdale,
N.Y.)
The 0-0 tie continued into the second half and PSU turned up the
heat, controlling play for most of the half. The Panthers
finally got the ball past the Owl goalie, but the goal was called
back because the shot was taken just outside the circle, and the
end of regulation finished all tied up.
PSU took only one shot in overtime, and made it count.
Sophomore Christina Parisi (Hampton Falls,
N.H./Winnacunnet) passed the ball to D'Ambroise, who was waiting on
the left post, and fired a laser to the back of the net for her
team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The Panthers out-shot the Owls, 9-2.
PSU freshman goalie Hannah Sawyer (Kingston, N.H.)
only needed to make one save to record her second victory of the
season. McCarthy made six saves in the Owl net.
Plymouth State will continue its three-game home stand next
Saturday against Fitchburg State at 3:00 p.m. Westfield State
will travel to Amherst College to play under the lights Wednesday
at 7:00 p.m.
