PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Julie Bannon
(Narragansett, RI) teamed with sophomore Gabriela Batek
(Greenville, RI) to earn an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, then won at
No. 1 singles to help the Rhode Island College women¹s tennis
team defeat Little East Conference rival Plymouth State University,
8-1, on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts.
The Anchorwomen improve to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in LEC play, while
the Panthers fall to 3-8 and 1-5, respectively.
RIC opened the day by sweeping all three doubles matches. The hosts
won all, but one, singles bouts as PSU sophomore Laura
Donovan (Acton, Mass.) earned a straight set victory (6-2,
6-3) at No. 2 singles. Donovan has won eight straight singles
matches and owns a team-best 8-1 record on the season.
Bannon took the first and third sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) in her win at
the top spot over freshman Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.) Batek,
junior Brittany LaBarre (Greenville, R.I.), freshman Marissa
Langellier (Greenville, R.I.) and freshman Doris Belanger (West
Warwick, R.I.) swept the remaining singles matches from No. 3-6, a
common occurrence for the club as of late.
Bannon and junior Jaclyn Eastman (Mansfield, Mass.), who is
wrapping up her career at the end of the season, were honored prior
to the start of the match, along with their families, as part of
Senior Day.
PSU returns home to host Western Connecticut next Saturday on
Senior Day at the P.E. Center Courts (12:00 p.m.). Rhode
Island College will host Worcester State on Monday.
