NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Sophomore Alex
Martins (Pawcatuck, Conn.) scored the only goal of the
game in the 60th minute Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State
University blanked the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 1-0,
in a hard-fought Little East Conference men's soccer match at
Cressy Field.
PSU gets back on the winning track and improves to 8-5 overall and
2-3 in the LEC. UMD was held scoreless for the third time in
five days and dropped to 8-5 and 2-2.
Martins converted a corner kick from senior Semir
Mehmedovic (Zvornik, Bosnia), just two minutes after
Martins had a good shot robbed by Corsair freshman goalkeeper
Kellen Rauch (Ashland, Mass.). It was Martins first goal of the
season and the second of his career.
Freshman Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstrad, Sweden) was
strong in the Panther goal and made eight saves to post his fifth
shutout of the season.
UMD nearly tied the game in the 62nd minute when
sophomore midfielder Kyle Lopes (Somerset, Mass.) fired a shot
toward the net which slammed the bottom of the crossbar and bounced
straight down. Believing they had tied the game, the Corsair
bench erupted into a loud cheer, but officials ruled that the ball
did not cross the goal line.
The Corsairs had an opportunity to extend the game into overtime in
the game's waning moments. Senior Jarred Goldstein (Weymouth,
Mass.) put forward a header from inside the box with 15 seconds
remaining, but missed wide to the left. The Corsairs outshot
the Panthers 20-12.
Plymouth State returns to action Wednesday afternoon when they host
Castleton in a non-conference match-up at Panther Field (4:30
p.m.) UMD is back in action Monday night when they face
Southern Maine in a neutral site make-up contest at Salem
State.
