PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Mike Anthony (Dartmouth, Mass.)
made eight saves Wednesday afternoon as Castleton State College
blanked Plymouth State University, 2-0, in a non-conference men's
soccer match at Panther Field.
The Spartans scored one goal in each half to post their second
straight victory and improve to 9-6-2 overall. The Panthers,
who had won three of their previous four games, fall to 8-6 on the
season.
Castleton broke on top with 10 minutes remaining in the opening
half as freshman Jacob Roswell (White River Jct,. Vt.) headed in a
crossing pass from senior Corey Robbins (Barre, Vt.) for his first
career goal. That ended up as the only scoring in the first
half as the Spartans had a 6-5 advantage in shots.
The Panthers peppered the Spartan goal with 16 shots in the second
half, but Anthony kept the home team off the board with seven
saves. PSU finished with a 21-10 margin in shots for the
game, but Anthony was the difference.
Castleton rounded out the scoring with seven minutes remaining when
sophomore Josh Costa (Sutton, Mass.) put home his seventh goal of
the season.
PSU junior goalkeepers Dan Salzer (Dover,
N.H./Oyster River) and Kevin Donahue (Manchester,
N.H./Memorial) made their first appearances of the season, each
playing one half and making one save.
Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Saturday
with a visit to the University of Massachusetts Boston for a 1:00
p.m. kick-off. Castleton returns home to host Johnson State
in a North Atlantic Conference match-up Friday at 7:00 p.m.in the
regular season finale.
