PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Semir Mehmedovic
(Zvornik, Bosnia/Franklin, N.H.) scored both goals Saturday
afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Western Connecticut
State University, 2-0, in Little East Conference men's soccer
action at rainy Panther Field.
The Panthers picked up their first LEC win of the season, improving
to 1-2 in conference play and 6-4 overall, while WestConn dropped
to 0-2 in LEC matches and 2-7 overall.
Mehmedovic also became the third player in school history to
reach the century mark in points with his two goals on
Saturday. He now has career totals of 38 goals, 24 assists
and 100 points. Mehmedovic is also one of the LEC scoring
leaders this season with nine goals and two assists.
It was a scoreless first half as the teams battled each other as
well as the rain. WestConn had a narrow 7-5 advantage in
shots over the first 45 minutes.
Mehmedovic put PSU in the scoring column 12 minutes into the second
half when he collected the ball just outside the box on the left
side. The keeper came out to block the angle but Mehmedovic looped
it over his head into the far corner for a 1-0 Panther lead.
The Colonials nearly tied the game a few minutes later but PSU
freshman keeper Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden)
made a nice leaping save on a shot by sophomore David Carey
(Torrington, Conn.)
Mehmedovic added the insurance goal with 14 minutes remaining when
he was fouled inside the box and converted the ensuing penalty
kick.
PSU enjoyed a 10-6 advantage in shots in the second half and
finished with a 15-13 margin for the game. Ohlsson finished
with five saves for the Panthers, while freshman Keith Guillette
(Seymour, Conn.) made four stops for the visitors.
Both teams are back in action Wednesday with non-conference games,
as PSU hosts Tufts University at 6:00 p.m. and WestConn visits
Worcester State at 7:00 p.m.
