BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Plymouth State University
women's volleyball team is in first place after day one action at
the 2009 Bridgewater State College Halloween Classic. The
Panthers are 2-0 at the tournament with 3-0 wins over both
Bridgewater State and Mass. Maritime Academy.
BSC, Framingham State College and Worcester State College are all
1-1, followed by Mass. Maritime which is 0-2. The host Bears
defeated Framingham, 3-0, but lost to tournament leader Plymouth
State. The Panthers improved to 27-4 on the season while BSC is now
7-19 and MMA 0-24.
The highlight of the evening for PSU was provided by senior
Brianna Kleckner (Terryville, Conn.), who became
the school's all-time assist leader in the first set of the first
match against Bridgewater. She surpassed the mark of 4,118
assists accomplished by Amanda Bagwell from
2002-05. Kleckner (right), who is ranked
21st in the nation in assists per set, upped her career
total to 4,182.
Senior Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) led the
Panthers in the opening-match win over the host Bears.
Badeau, who leads the nation in hitting percentage and ranks
seventh in kills per set, finished with 15 kills and a .535 attack
percentage. She also chipped in with three service aces and
three blocks. Badeau got strong support from senior
Carly Newton (Centerville, Mass.), who had 11
kills and a .647 percentage, and sophomore Meghan
Sullivan (Marlton, N.J.), who added eight kills and 10
digs.
Sophomore libero Alex Avery (Milton, N.H.) topped
the defense with 16 digs and senior Kathy
Frankowski's (Farmington, Conn.) chipped in with 10.
Sullivan led the Panthers in the win over Mass Maritime with 12
kills, while Avery had 10 digs and seven service aces. Some
of the Panther reserves got extra playing time against the winless
Buccaneers, and sophomore Elissa Morin (Nashua,
N.H.) led the way with five kills.
The remainder of the tournament will take place on Saturday
starting at 10 a.m. at the Tinsley Center. PSU will meet
Framingham State at 12 noon and Worcester State at 2:00 p.m.
This will wrap of the regular season for PSU.
