BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Plymouth State University
women's volleyball team captured the 2009 Bridgewater State College
Halloween Classic Saturday afternoon, winning two more 3-0 matches
to complete the tournament with a 4-0 record.
The Panthers knocked off Framingham State in Saturday's first
contest, 25-8, 25-14, 25-14, and came back to down Worcester State,
25-22, 25-10, 25-16. The Panthers, who swept Bridgewater
State and Mass. Maritime in Friday night's matches, complete the
regular season with a sparkling 29-4 overall record, with three
regular season tournament titles.
Senior Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) was named the
tournament's Most Valuable Player after recording 42 kills, 12
blocks and seven service aces in the four matches. She made
10 kills and five blocks in Saturday's win over Framingham State
and added 13 kills and four blocks in the victory over Worcester
State.
Senior Carly Newton (Centerville, Mass.) and
sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Marlton, N.J.) each
chipped in with eight kills in PSU's victory over Framingham State,
and Newton recorded 11 kills against Worcester State.
Sophomore Alex Avery (Milton, N.H.) and junior
Kelsey Petty (Salem, N.H.) registered 15 and 11
digs, respectively.
Plymouth State ended up in second place in the Little East
Conference regular season standings with a 6-1mark. PSU and
regular season champion UMass Boston (7-0) will both receive a
first-round bye in the LEC Tournament and advance to the semifinals
next Friday (Nov. 6) at UMB. PSU will face the winner of
Tuesday's first round match between #6 Eastern Connecticut and #3
Western Connecticut at 6:00 p.m., and UMB will meet the winner of
Tuesday's match between #5 Rhode Island College and #4 Keene State
at 4:00 p.m..
The LEC Championship match will be at UMB on Saturday at 12 noon,
with the winner receiving an automatic berth into the NCAA Division
Tournament.
