PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Salem State College pushed its
winning streak to six matches Thursday afternoon by defeating
Plymouth State University, 6-3, in a Little East Conference women's
tennis match at the Central Campus Tennis Courts.
Salem State, which is now in second place in the Little East,
remained unbeaten at home this season. The Lady Vikings are 6-1
overall and 4-0 in the conference. Senior Megan Cote (Fall
River, Mass.) and sophomore Carly Muniz (Gloucester, Mass.) have
yet to lose in conference play and they continued their streak by
winning at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
Plymouth State continued to get outstanding play from sophomores
Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass.) and Lydia
Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) They teamed up for their
fifth consecutive victory at No. 2 doubles, improving to 5-1 on the
season. Donovan also won her seventh straight match at No. 2
singles and owns a team-best 7-1 record this season, while Smith
has won three in a row at No. 4 singles to improve her record to
4-5.
The Lady Vikings opened up by taking two of three doubles
matches to gain the early momentum. Cote and Jess Distler
(Pepperell, Mass.) won at No. 1 doubles, while Muniz and Michelle
McEwen (Billerica, Mass.) were winners at No. 3. Joining Cote
and Muniz as singles winners for Salem State were McEwen and Patty
Quartararo (Lexington, Mass.).
Plymouth State, 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference, plays
another LEC road match Saturday at Rhode Island College (12:00
p.m.)
