SALEM,
Mass. - The Salem State College men's ice hockey team
improved to 2-0 on the season Thursday night, defeating Plymouth
State University, 5-2, in Massachusetts State College Athletic
Conference action at Rockett Arena.
The Vikings
overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit to pull out the comeback
victory on goals by five different players. They scored twice
late in the second period to tie the score, and added three
unanswered goals in the final frame, including an empty-netter, to
claim the win. PSU suffered its first loss after opening the season
with three straight triumphs.
Plymouth State
scored the only two goals of the first period, an even-strength
marker by sophomore Chris Zaremba (Colorado
Springs, Colo.) at 9:50 and a power-play goal by senior
Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md) at 16:35.
The Panthers
maintained the two-goal advantage until late in the second period
when sophomore Justin Roy (North Bay, Ont.) took control of a pass
through the slot from sophomore Matt Genovese (Hingham, MA) and
sent the puck over the shoulder of the Panther goaltender. Salem
State got a key goal from defenseman Brett Noll (Sandwich, Mass.)
with 15 seconds remaining in the period to tie the game.
Freshman Nick
Lampson (Groton, Mass,) scored the eventual game-winner for Salem
State 4:49 into the third period. The Vikings put two more goals
scoreboard before the final buzzer, one off the stick of junior
Matthew Johnson (Lynn, Mass.) at 9:41, and an empty-net goal by
senior Chris MacInnis (Waltham, Mass.) with just over a minute to
play.
Salem State
senior goalie James Lacour (Silver Spring, Md.) finished the night
with 24 saves, while PSU freshman Jack Astedt
(Angelholm, Sweden) made 38 saves as the hosts outshot the visitors
43-26.
Both teams play
MASCAC games again on Saturday, Salem State traveling to Fitchburg
State and PSU returning home to host UMass Dartmouth in the home
opener at Waterville Valley (6:00 p.m.)
