MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Freshman Drew Chernisky [Valley View,
Ohio] recorded her first career hat trick Saturday night, scoring
three goals in the second period as Salve Regina University women's
ice hockey recorded a 6-1 victory over Plymouth State University in
the regular season finale for both schools.
Freshman
defenseman Kristen Aiello [Braintree, Mass.] scored her first
collegiate goal for Salve with the only tally of the first period.
Kendra Andrie [Muskegon, Mich.] assisted on the score and later on
Chernisky's first goal of the night.
Plymouth State
evened the score with a short-handed goal from freshman defenseman
Molly Blaine [Concord, N.H.] just 47 seconds into
the middle frame.
Salve Regina
got the eventual game-winner from Chernisky on a power-play
opportunity. Chernisky scored her second goal three seconds into
another power play while Caitlin Campbell [Hingham, Mass.] and
Molly Golden [Milton, Mass.] assisted on the tally. Campbell
assisted on the next score 40 seconds later as Gabrielle Gardner
[Farmington, Mich.] registered her 10th goal. The Seahawks' most
productive period of the season continued with Chernisky's hat
trick and finished with Campbell's 11th goal of the season, tying
her with Gardner for the team lead in points (26).
Salve Regina
(16-8-1; 12-8-0 ECAC Women's East) has its most wins in a single
season while enjoying its best-ever winning percentage (.660). If
Castleton State defeats UMass Boston on Sunday (5:30 p.m.), the
Seahawks will have their first hosting opportunity in the ECAC
playoffs next Saturday.
Seahawk
netminder Lauren Barella [Lennon, Mich.] improved to 7-1-0 on the
season while stopping 13 Panther shots. Plymouth State goalie
Lindsey DeLorie [Holliston, Mass.] made 41 saves.
DeLorie leads the nation in saves for the second straight year,
finishing with 982 stops this season.
PSU completed
its third varsity season with a 1-21-0 overall record and 1-18-0
mark in its second season in the ECAC East.
