PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior
Dan Maiorana (Walpole, Mass.) recorded a game-high
six points Saturday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to
a 15-5 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston in the
Little East Conference men's lacrosse regular season finale for
both schools at Panther Field.
PSU won two of its last three games to wrap up the regular season
at 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the LEC, while UMB concludes its campaign
at 2-12 overall and 0-7 in conference play. Plymouth State
has locked up the fourth seed in next week's LEC Tournament, and
will host a first-round game on Tuesday at Panther Field against
fifth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The 4-3
conference record is the best for PSU since the LEC started men's
lacrosse in 2001.
Maiorana, one of five Panthers celebrating Senior Day, scored two
goals and added a season-high four assists for his six
points. Junior Tim Hadley (New London,
N.H./Kearsarge) and sophomore Andrew Eriksen
(Beverly, Mass.) scored four goals apiece to add to the Panther
total, and senior Conor McCullough (Dover, N.H.)
and junior Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.)
chipped in with two goals each. Junior Derick
Smith (New London, N.H./Kearsarge) collected a team-high
six ground balls.
Junior Al Craven (Milton, Mass.) and Aaron Pollock (Belmont, Mass.)
scored two goals apiece to lead the Beacons, and sophomore John
Canty (Milton, Mass.) tallied one. Senior Matt Dunn (Milton,
Mass.) picked up five ground balls and Canty won seven of 12
face-offs.
PSU also displayed a strong defensive effort, forcing UMB into 13
failed clears in 25 attempts. The Panthers had a 43-27
advantage in shots and a 45-30 margin in ground balls.
Eriksen scored two goals for PSU to help the Panthers to a 5-1 lead
after one quarter. UMB notched the first goal of the second
quarter but the home team found the net five times in the last four
minutes of the period to assume a 10-2 advantage at halftime. The
teams each scored once in the third period, and PSU put the game
away by outscoring the visitors 4-2 in the final frame.
The Panther seniors who played their final regular season home game
in front of the largest crowd of the season included Maiorana,
McCullough, Jordan Buzzell (Bath, Maine),
Dave Mokos (Nottingham, N.H.) and Tim
