SALEM, Mass. - Seniors Sammi
Romano (Kingston, N.H.) and Cortney
Colligan (Brookfield, N.H.) scored goals Saturday
afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University field hockey team
to a 2-1 victory over Salem State College in the rainy Little East
conference opener for both teams.
PSU kept its perfect record intact, improving to 3-0 on the season,
while the Vikings had their record evened at 1-1.
Romano put the Panthers on the board at 13:12 of the first period
with her first goal of the season, directing a loose ball in front
of the Salem State net past junior goalie Jess McKenna (Rowley,
Mass.) The Panthers controlled the tempo for most of the half
have leaving very few scoring chances for the Vikings.
Colligan, a defender who moved up to play forward, gave Plymouth
State a 2-0 lead when she scored on a pass from Kristina
Conroy (Wakefield, Mass.) seven minutes into the second
half. Junior Katie LaPrad (Spencer, Mass.) cut the deficit to
one goal for the Vikings on an assist from Sarah Quimby (Turner,
Maine) at the 48:39 mark, but Salem State could not score the
equalizer.
PSU sophomore Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.)
remained unbeaten (3-0), making four second-half saves to post the
victory.
The Panthers return home to host Lasell College on Wednesday in a
non-conference game at Arold Field (4:00 p.m.) Salem State
visits Becker College Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
