NEW LONDON, N.H. - Plymouth State University
handed Colby-Sawyer College its first loss of the season Wednesday
evening with a 3-0 verdict in the Chargers' home opener. The
Panthers won by scores of 25-22, 27-25, and 25-21. The Chargers
fall to 4-1 on the season, while Plymouth State remains perfect at
9-0 and has yet to drop a single set.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set and
did not look back. After the Chargers got back within two points at
24-22, senior Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.)
connected on her third kill of the set to give Plymouth State a 1-0
lead. Sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Marlton, N.J.)
led the Panthers with four first set kills, while the Chargers kept
it close with six kills from junior Michelle Doody (Franklin,
Mass.).
The second set featured 12 ties and four lead changes. Badeau tied
the score at 20-20 with her only service ace of the match. The set
would be tied at 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25 before a kill by Sullivan
and a Colby-Sawyer attacking error gave the Panthers a 27-25 win.
Senior Carly Newton (Centerville, Mass.) had four
kills in the set to lead the Panthers.
The third set was close throughout and was tied at 16-16. A 9-5 run
by Plymouth State sealed the win and the sweep.
Sullivan finished with a double-double (12 kills, 13 digs), while
Badeau contributed 10 kills. Senior Brianna
Kleckner (Terryville, Conn.) had a match-high 37 assists.
Sophomore Alex Avery (Milton, N.H.) had a
team-high 17 digs.
Doody led all players with 16 kills and added 14 digs. Senior
Mickey Lapan (Medway, Mass.) recorded a match-high 25 digs. Senior
Meg White (Monroe, Conn.) tallied eight kills and 10 digs.
Plymouth State, ranked ninth in this week's New England poll, opens
Little East Conference play this Saturday with an LEC round-robin
at Rhode Island College (2:00 p.m.) Colby-Sawyer begins a six-match
road streak on Thursday with a 7:00 pm start at Rivier.
