WATERVILLE, Maine - Senior Sarah
Smith (Lexington, Mass.) scored three goals Sunday
afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University field hockey team
to a 5-1 non-conference road victory over Thomas College.
Senior Morgan Lemmon (Gilford, N.H./Bishop Brady)
added a goal and an assist for the Panthers, and classmate
Sammi Romano (Kingston, N.H./Sanborn Regional)
also found the net for the visitors. The Panthers got back on
the winning track, improving to 5-1 on the season, while the
Terriers dropped their fourth in a row and fell to 1-4.
Smith (right) opened the scoring for PSU midway through
the first half with her first of the game. Lemmon and Romano
tallied consecutive goals two minutes apart to extend the Panther
lead to 3-1 with nine minutes left in the half. Thomas got on
the board just 2:38 before the break on a goal by junior Ali
Kriegel (Winslow, Maine).
Smith finished off her third career hat trick with a pair of
second-half goals, coming with 18:30 and 16:00 on the clock.
PSU finished with a 21-7 advantage in shots and a 13-3 margin in
penalty corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton,
N.H.) earned the victory in goal, making two saves in her 54
minutes. Freshman Hannah Sawyer (Kingston,
N.H./Sanborn Regional) came on for the final 16 minutes and made
one stop.
PSU plays a pair of home games this week at Arold Field, hosting
New England College in a non-conference encounter on Wednesday
(4:00 p.m.) and Western Connecticut in a Little East Conference
affair on Saturday (12 noon).
