PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Kristina
Conroy (Wakefield, Mass.) scored two goals Saturday
afternoon to boost Plymouth State University past Western
Connecticut State University, 4-1, in Little East Conference field
hockey action at Arold Field.
The Panthers pick up their second conference win of the season
(2-1) and improve to 6-2 overall. The Colonials remain
winless in conference play (0-3) and fall to 2-7 overall.
After only two shots total for both teams in the first 20
minutes of the game, Plymouth State scored first. Senior
Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.) took a shot and
Conroy deflected it past the Colonial goal keeper, and the Panthers
took the 1-0 advantage into the second half.
The Panthers were on the board again 10 minutes into the second
half when senior Cortney Colligan (Brookfield,
N.H) fired a shot into the goal from the top of the circle off a
penalty corner pass from teamamte Lauren Plummer
(Monument Beach, Mass.)
WestConn cut the Panther lead to one midway through the second half
when freshman Deanne Mastrocola (Goshen, Conn.) let off a shot that
was blocked by a Panther defender and fellow freshman Valerie Lupo
(New Fairfield, Conn.) knocked the deflection passed the PSU
goalie. Three minutes later Conroy recorded her second goal
of the day on a long pass from sophomore Erin
Norris (Hilton, N.Y.). Senior Sammi
Romano (Kingston, N.H.) scored in the final minutes to
increase the Panther lead to three.
Sophomore Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.) made two
saves in the PSU net. Freshman Heather Stone (Valhalla, N.Y.)
stopped 11 shots for the Colonials. PSU finished with a 20-6
advantage in shots.
Plymouth State will be at LEC opponent Framingham State Wednesday
at 4:00 p.m. WestConn will travel to Eastern Connecticut to
play under the lights Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
