BANGOR, Maine - Senior Semir
Mehmedovic (Zvornik, Bosnia/Franklin, N.H.) played a part
in both goals Sunday afternoon as the Plymouth State University
men's soccer team defeated Husson University, 2-1, in
non-conference action in rainy Bangor, Maine.
The Panthers notched both their goals in the first 13 minutes of
the contest and allowed just one second-half goal to the
Eagles. PSU stops a three-game losing streak and improves to
5-3 overall, while Husson drops to 3-6-1.
Mehmedovic scored off a direct kick from the left side of the field
just nine minutes after the opening whistle, shooting a laser past
Husson keeper Miguel Dominguez ( Rome, Ga.). Three minutes
later, the Panthers scored what would become the game winner off of
another direct kick. Mehmedovic shot one on goal from just
outside of the left corner of the box; Dominguez made the initial
save but could not hold on to the ball and senior Drew
McSpiritt (Londonderry, N.H.) capitalized, burying the
rebound in the back of the net at the 12:29 mark.
Mehmedovic, who leads PSU in scoring with seven goals and two
assists this season, continues his assault on the Panther career
scoring records. He now has 36 goals, 24 assists and 96
points, and ranks in the top five in school history in all three
categories.
Freshmen Mason Smith (Houma, La.) scored a header for the Eagles'
only goal 11 minutes into the second half. Senior Mark
Trombly (Burnham, Maine) provided the assist dribbling the ball
down to the endline and chipping it to Smith for the goal.
PSU had a 16-6 shot advantage in the first half while Husson had a
13-7 margin in the second half, with the Panthers out-shooting the
Eagles for the game, 23-19. Panther freshman keeper
Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden) recorded 11 saves
on the day, while Dominguez recorded nine saves for Husson.
PSU plays another non-conference match Wednesday at Middlebury
(4:30 p.m.), while Husson returns to action Friday at Maine
Maritime (7:30 p.m.).
