WINCHENDON, Mass. - Junior Sean Buckley
(Sagamore Beach, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 8:53 to
play in regulation Saturday evening to give Plymouth State
University a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce University in a
non-conference men's hockey game at The Winchendon School Ice
Arena.
Plymouth State
picked up its fourth straight victory, improving to 10-6 overall,
while the upset-minded Ravens suffered their fourth straight loss
and fell to 4-14-2.
After a
scoreless first period, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring 4:49
into the second frame. Senior Phil LaBreck (Thornton, N.H.)
intercepted a PSU breakout pass at the top of the slot and snapped
a shot just inside the left post for his eighth goal of the season.
Plymouth State
evened the score at 1-1 just over five minutes later. Freshman
Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa.) sent the puck to
sophomore Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
at the top of the left-wing circle, and Zaremba wired a shot to the
top corner for his fifth of the season. Franklin Pierce had
an opportunity to reclaim the lead minutes later as LaBreck was
awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down from behind on a
breakaway, but freshman goaltender Jack Astedt
(Angelholm, Sweden) came up with the save to keep the score even.
PSU would score
the tiebreaker at the 11:07 mark of the third period. Junior
Tommy Woods (Nashua, N.H.) sent the puck to
sophomore Bryan Kriner (Newport, R.I.) at the
right point. Kriner found Buckley streaking down the slot and
Buckley redirected the puck into the net for the eventual
game-winner.
Astedt stopped
28 shots to earn the win between the pipes for Plymouth State.
Sophomore Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.) made 25 saves and took the loss
in net for Franklin Pierce.
Plymouth State
returns home to host Framingham State on Thursday at Waterville
Valley (6:00 p.m.) The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday
when they travel to Stonehill for a 2:00 p.m. faceoff.
