WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Junior Rachel Sousa (Woburn,
Mass.) and senior Maria Nasta (Andover, Mass.) combined for three
goals and four assists Saturday afternoon as the University of
Massachusetts Boston defeated Plymouth State University, 9-1, in an
ECAC Women's East ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Arena.
Sousa scored
two goals and assisted on another while Nasta scored one goal and
set up three others. The Beacons won their fourth straight
game to improve to 11-7 overall and 9-4-0 in the ECAC East, good
for third place. PSU continues to search for its first win of
the season (0-16-0, 0-12-0).
Nasta assisted
on all three Beacon goals in the first period, an even-strength
marker by sophomore Sam Phillips (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and power play
goals by Sousa and freshman Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, Mass.).
Sophomore
Tina Worley (Anchorage, Alaska) gave the Panthers
some life with the first goal of the second period at 4:05,
assisted by junior Mollie Metcalfe (Orleans,
Mass.), but UMB scored three more times before the end of the
period to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Junior Kristen Smith
(Beavercreek, Ohio) scored at the 9:20 mark and sophomore Whitney
Fraleigh (Fresno, Calif.) and freshman Julia Gould (Flemington,
N.J.) followed with their first goals of the season.
Sophomore
Karoline Perdios (Braintree, Mass.) also tallied her first of the
season for UMB to open the third-period scoring, and Nasta and
Sousa each scored later in the frame to round out the scoring.
Freshman Jami
Cudmore (Balgonie, Sask.) made 14 saves to earn her first career
victory in the UMB goal. Junior Lauren
Bonanni (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Nicole
Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) combined to make 32 saves in
the Panther goal.
PSU is back on
the ice Tuesday with a non-conference game at Bowdoin College (5:00
p.m.) UMB will be home next weekend for a pair of games
against Connecticut College and Saint Michael's College.
