Panthers down Mount Holyoke after loss to
Springfield
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plymouth State
University women's volleyball team posted a 1-1 record Friday
evening in the annual Johnson & Wales University Fall Classic
at the Horborside Recreation Center.
The Panthers were defeated in their first match by Springfield
College in three sets (25-15, 25-20, and 25-15), but rebounded with
a 3-1 victory (17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-11) over Mount Holyoke
College. PSU and fellow Little East Conference schools
Western Connecticut State University and the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth all finished the evening with 1-1 records,
while host JWU went 2-0 and Springfield was 1-0.
Springfield, ranked No. 3 in New England, improved to 15-2 overall
with its victory over Plymouth State. Heather Lively led the
Pride with 11 kills, and Meaghan Hart recorded 14 digs.
Sophomore Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) topped the
Panthers with seven kills and six digs while junior setter
Sarah Cady (Holliston, Mass.) finished with 20
assists and five digs.
Stoodley and Cady also provided the highlights for PSU in the win
over Mount Holyoke, Stoodley with 12 kills and eight digs and Cady
with 12 digs and 24 assists. Morgan Cooley made nine kills
for the Lyons.
PSU, 9-7 overall, plays two more matches in the tournament on
Saturday, facing Smith College at 12 noon and host JWU at 2:00
p.m.
