Box Score Freshmen lead Panthers past Eagles
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University
got goals from three freshmen Sunday afternoon to defeat Husson
University, 3-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at
Panther Field.
The Panthers dominated the shots department by a 31-1 count, but
needed a pair of second-half goals to secure the victory. PSU
gets back on the winning track, improving to 4-7-1 overall, while
the Eagles drop to 2-10. Freshman Joe
Drapeau (Lincoln, N.H.) got his first career start in the
Panther goal and stopped the only shot he faced to record the
shutout.
Senior Stefan Welch (Tokyo, Japan) opened the
scoring at the 36-minute mark of the first half. A Panther
corner kick created a scramble in front of the Husson goal, and
Welch booted the loose ball into the roof of the net.
PSU out-shot the Eagles 14-1 in the first half, but had
to settle to a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Panthers doubled their margin 15 minutes into the second half
when sophomore Alex Martins (Pawcatuck, Conn.)
sent a through ball to freshman David Quist
(Stockholm, Sweden), who received the pass, spun around and shot
the ball into the lower right of the net. Freshman
Faisal Al-Dawoud (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) finished
off the scoring in the 81st minute when his shot from
the top of the box slipped through the keeper's hands and
into the goal.
Sophomore Mason Smith (Houma, La.) played a solid game in the
Husson goal, finishing with seven saves. The Eagles were also
bolstered by the strong play of sophomore center back James
Crockford (Watford, England), who broke up several Panther
offensive plays.
Plymouth State is back in action next Saturday at Panther Field
with a Little East Conference match-up against UMass
Dartmouth (4:30 p.m.). Husson returns home to host a pair of
North Atlantic Conference games next weekend against Green Mountain
and Castleton.
