Box Score Panthers sweep singles to take LEC
match
BOSTON, Mass. – The Plymouth State
University women's tennis team swept all six singles matches
Saturday afternoon en route to an 8-1 victory over the University
of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match played at
Boston College High School.
The Panthers led 2-1 after doubles play but removed all doubt by
sweeping the singles matches, all in straight sets. PSU got
back on the winning track, stopping a three-match skid and
improving to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in conference matches. The
Beacons fall to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in LEC play.
Sophomore Rachel Figura (Cheshire, Conn.) and
junior Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) continued
their strong play for the Panthers, teaming up for a victory at No.
2 doubles and improving their record to 4-3. Figura also
upped her singles record to 4-3 with a win at No. 3, and Smith
remained undefeated on the season in singles (7-0) with a victory
at No. 4. Junior Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass.) also
won twice for the Panthers, improving her singles record to 5-1
with a win at No. 2, and pairing up with freshman Elizabeth
Silsby (Dorset, Vt.) for the triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Also winning for the Panthers was sophomore Sara
Burke (Barrington, R.I.) at No. 1 singles, improving her
record to 4-3, and freshmen Molly Heartfield
(Dorset, Vt.) and Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.)
at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
The UMass Boston number one tandem of sophomore Anitra Kloczewiak
(Newton, Mass.) and freshman Destanee Ringler (Scituate, Mass.)
posted the only win for the Beacons.
The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to
Providence to take on LEC foe Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m.,
while the Panthers head to Lyndonville, Vt. on Wednesday, when
they'll hit the courts against Lyndon State College at 3:30
p.m.
