Stoodley named All-Tourn. after two more Panther
wins
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plymouth State
University women's volleyball team finished in second place
out of eight teams this weekend in the annual Johnson & Wales
University Fall Classic after capturing two more victories Saturday
afternoon at the Harborside Recreation Center.
The Panthers defeated Smith College three in a row (25-10, 25-23,
25-20) in the first match Saturday, and outlasted host Johnson
& Wales in five sets (25-14, 19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12) in the
second match. PSU finished the two-day event with a 3-1
overall record for a runner-up finish among eight teams.
Springfield College captured the championship with a 4-0 tourney
record, including a win over Plymouth State Friday night, and host
Johnson & Wales finished third with a 3-2 mark.
The two victories for Plymouth State also give head coach
Moira Long career win No. 300. Now in her
13th season at PSU and 14th overall, Long has
a career coaching record of 300-169.
Junior defensive specialist Danielle Stoodley
(Salem, N.H.) was Plymouth State's representative on the
All-Tournament Team. Stoodley (right) averaged
4.4 digs per set in the two-day affair, including a season-high 23
digs in Friday night's win over Mount Holyoke, and a
team-high 19 digs against Johnson & Wales.
Sophomore Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) had another
strong day for the Panthers. She pounded out 40 kills in the
tournament, including 12 in Saturday's win over Johnson &
Wales, and she also recorded 39 digs and eight service aces.
Other top performances for PSU on Saturday included junior
Elissa Morin (Nashua, N.H.), who had a team-high
13 kills against JWU; and freshman Allie Jones
(Canton, Mass.), who recorded nine kills against both JWU and
Smith.
PSU, 11-7 overall, returns to Little East Conference play this
Tuesday with a visit to Keene State College (6:00 p.m.)
