Panthers remain one match behind LEC
co-leaders
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Plymouth State
University women's volleyball team defeated Eastern
Connecticut State University in straight sets Saturday afternoon in
a Little East Conference match at Geissler Gymnasium.
Plymouth State improved to 16-11 overall and 4-1 in the Little East
to remain one match behind conference co-leaders UMass Boston and
Keene State. Eastern Conn., which won three straight LEC
titles from 2005-07, dropped to 12-13 overall and 0-5 in conference
play. The match was closer than the set scores indicate as
PSU won 30-28, 25-23 and 27-25.
The Panthers survived set point in the first set, scoring the final
three points after trailing 28-27. There were 16 ties in the first
set. The Warriors led by four points, 20-16, before the Panthers
used a 5-1 run to surge in front, 22-21.
Eastern also led late in the second set, taking a 23-21 advantage
before PSU scored the final four points. Plymouth State
didn't lead in the second set until 24-23 while the Warriors
led by as many as six, 18-12.
PSU closed out the win by scoring the final two points to snap a
25-all tie. The Warriors led, 12-8, and needed only one point to
take the set with a 24-23 lead.
Sophomore Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) and
Elissa Morin (Nashua, N.H.) combined for 23 kills
for the winners, Stoodley leading players on both teams with
12. Danielle Stoodley (Salem, NH) totaled 21 digs
and Casey Stoodley 15. Sarah Cody (Holliston, MA)
collected 37 assists and Morin and Kaitlyn
Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) combined for seven blocks.
Samantha Slonski (Griswold, Conn.) led Eastern with 11 kills, and
added 10 digs and 17 assists. Katie Wilson (Pittsburg,
Calif.) contributes eight kills and three blocks, freshman
Erynn Miller (Stratford, Conn.) seven kills and 14 digs, and Gianna
Trombino (East Moriches, N.Y.) five.
Eastern visits UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday in a Little East match at
7 p.m., while PSU hosts UMass Boston at 6 p.m. in a re-match of
last year's LEC title match.
