Senior midfielder Eric Owens (Newton, N.H.)
highlighted the day for the home team, scoring two first-half goals
to give the Panthers a temporary 3-1 lead. Sophomore
Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y.) also scored his
first goal of the season, but the Panthers dropped to 5-10-1 on the
season.
The two teams traded goals on rebounds in the first 15 minutes of
the game, junior Ryan Obolewicz (Bow, N.H.) scoring his first of
the season for Babson in the eighth minute and Spear answering with
his first for PSU six minutes later. Owens then got hot for
PSU, knocking in consecutive goals less than four minutes apart,
giving the Panthers a two-goal lead with 18 minutes remaining in
the first half.
Babson cut the deficit to one with four minutes to go in the half
as Masterson tallied his first of the year. The Beavers had a
9-6 shot advantage in the opening 25 minutes but trailed, 3-2.
PSU had a golden opportunity to extend its lead early in the second
half but Babson keeper Peter Crowley (Lexington, Mass.) made a
superb stop on Spear from point-blank range. Moments later,
Anderson tied the score with a nice header on a cross from junior
Billy Nickerson (Middleton, Mass.)
The Beavers pulled away in the final 15 minutes. Walker put
his team in front, converting a nice through-pass from Masterson in
the 76th minute, and Anderson finished off the scoring with four
minutes to play with his team-leading 11th on the year when he
deflected a shot by sophomore Justin Leblanc (Manchester, Conn.)
with his head.
Babson finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots and a 6-3 margin
in corner kicks. Crowley finished with five saves in the
Babson goal, and PSU senior Dan Salzer (Dover,
N.H./Oyster River) made nine saves at the other end.
PSU seniors who were honored prior to the game included Owens,
Salzer, forward Tommy Schrey (Munich, Germany),
and midfielder Stefan Welch (Tokyo, Japan).
Plymouth State wraps up the season on Saturday with a Little East
Conference match at Eastern Connecticut. Babson concludes the
regular season Saturday with a key New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference game at Clark.
