SALEM,
Mass. - Senior Chris Chambers (Crofton,
Md.) scored the game- winning goal early in the third period
Thursday night as Plymouth State University edged the Salem
State Vikings, 3-2, in Massachusetts State College Athletic
Conference action.
The Panthers,
13-7-1 overall and 9-4-1 in the MASCAC, move into a tie for third
place with the Vikings, 9-8-3 overall and 8-3-3 in league
play. PSU won two out of three this season against Salem
State and owns the potential tiebreaker; Both teams have 19 points
and closely trail Fitchburg State (22 points) and Westfield
State (20).
The scoring
began just past the midpoint of the first period with a goal from
sophomore Brian Kriner (Newport, R.I.). Freshman
Sean Foley (Weymouth, Mass.) added to the Panther
lead with a shot below the right wing circle after being set up for
the goal by David Rose (Haddonfield, NJ). The
Vikings closed out the period without a goal despite putting 17
shots on Plymouth goaltender Jack Astedt
(Angelholm, Sweden).
The Vikings
came back with a pair of second-period goals to tie the game. Mike
Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) broke the Vikings drought when he found
the back of the net at 10:40. Nick Lampson (Groton, MA) tied the
game with a wrist shot with less than 30 seconds left in the second
period.
During a
Panther power play early in the third, Chambers, the MASCAC goal
and points leader, scored his 15th of the season at the
1:58 mark for the game-winner.
Astedt
finished the game with 35 saves on 37 shots to earn the win for
PSU. His Viking counterpart, Andrew Knight (Calgary, Alberta) made
18 saves on the 21 shots he faced.
Both teams play
MASCAC games again on Saturday, Salem State visiting
Fitchburg State (7:00 p.m.) and Plymouth State returning home to
host UMass Dartmouth (6:00 p.m.)
