PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Seniors Bryan
Tracy (Manchester, N.H./Central) and Mike
Chergey (Bow, N.H.) scored 19 points apiece Saturday
afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 79-58 victory over
the University of Massachusetts Boston in Little East Conference
men's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.
Tracy reached his season-high with 19 points, making 6-of-10 field
goal attempts and sharing team-high honors with eight rebounds,
while Chergey made 7-of-10 shots, including a career-best five
three-point field goals. Classmate Jason
O'Keefe (Everett, Mass.) chipped in with 14 points as the
Panthers won for the fourth time in their last five outings.
Fellow seniors Eric Hondal (Miami, Fla.) and
Bill Stowell (Exeter, N.H.) also celebrated
"Senior Day" as Hondal contributed seven points and five assists
and Stowell collected three points and eight boards.
PSU improved to 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the LEC, while UMB fell to
4-19 and 2-10. The Panthers are tied with Western Connecticut
for fourth place in the conference with two games to play.
Junior Pat Joseph (Queens, N.Y.) turned in a solid performance for
the Beacons, scoring a team-high 16 points on 8-of-12
shooting. Sophomore Michael Mitchell (Boston, Mass.) was the
next highest UMB scorer with eight points.
It was a close game the first 15 minutes, with neither team leading
by more than four points. PSU went on a 16-6 run late in the
half to open up a nine-point margin, and it was a seven-point
Panther advantage at the break, 41-34.
PSU opened the second half with a 16-2 burst to take a commanding
21-point lead, and the Beacons didn't challenge the rest of the
way. The Panthers shot 55 percent for the game while holding
UMB to a 43 percent clip, and the home team won the battle of the
glass, 37-27.
Both teams wrap up the regular season next week with a pair of LEC
games. PSU travels to Keene State on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) and
Rhode Island College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) while UMB hosts
Southern Maine on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) before traveling to Western
Connecticut next Saturday (3:00 p.m.)
