KEENE, N.H. – Sophomores Matt Shairer
(Wrentham, Mass.) and Griffin Meehan (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded
seven points apiece Tuesday afternoon as the Keene State College
men's lacrosse team clinched at least a share of the Little
East Conference regular season championship with a 15-7 victory
over in-state rival Plymouth State University at the Owl Athletic
Complex.
Shairer contributed six goals and one assist while Meehan was good
for three goals and four assists as the Owls remained perfect in
LEC play at 5-0 and 9-5 on the season. Senior Brian
Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) and junior Andrew
Eriksen (Beverly, Mass.) had three-point days for the
Panthers, who had their four-game winning streak stopped and fell
to 3-3 in league play and 6-7 overall.
The Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, starting
with local midfielder Ian Hart's (Richmond, N.H.) marker just
under two minutes into the game. After Giroux's first of two
goals put the Panthers on the scoreboard, KSC rattled off four
straight goals, capped by senior Easton Kezer's (Derry, N.H.)
unassisted breakaway goal to make it 7-1 in favor of the home team.
Plymouth State cut the margin to 7-3 on a man-up tally by senior
Steve Engel (South Windsor, Conn.) and
Eriksen's unassisted score with 7:16 remaining in the first
half. The Owls answered with four straight goals to close out the
period, led by Meehan's goal and two assists for an 11-3 lead
at the half.
Keene State again outscored the Panthers in the third period with
Shairer and Meehan each netting multiple markers. Freshman
Ty Long (Dover, N.H.) scored the only Panthers
goal in the quarter from senior Brett Zabrowski
(Bayville, N.Y.)
Plymouth State shutout the Owls in the fourth quarter and scored
three times, with Giroux and Eriksen each earning multiple points.
But the Owls would hold off the Panther attack and come away with a
15-7 victory.
Keene State freshman goaltender Jasson Lesser (Brewster, N.Y.)
played the first-half, allowing just three goals and making three
saves, and junior Alec Corliss (Waltham, Mass.) allowed just four
goals while making 12 saves in the second half. Panthers net
minder Kevin Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) made nine
saves.
Both teams complete the regular season with LEC games on Saturday,
Plymouth State visiting UMass Boston at 1:00 p.m. and Keene State
hosting Southern Maine on Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.
