Panthers down UMD in LEC match, but fall to
Colby-Sawyer
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State
University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches
Saturday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium, defeating the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-0, in a Little East Conference match,
but falling to Colby-Sawyer College in a non-conference clash,
3-1. UMD also outlasted CSC in the middle match, 3-2.
PSU handed UMD its first loss of the season in the day's
first match, 25-21, 25-16, and 25-11. The Corsairs came back
to edge Colby-Sawyer in the middle match of the day, winning 15-13
in the fifth set, and the Chargers finished off the day with the
3-1 triumph over PSU (25-13, 18-25, 25-22, 25-20). All three
teams finished the day at 1-1, while PSU is now 8-6 overall and 2-0
in LEC matches, UMD is now 12-1 overall and 1-1 in the LEC, and
Colby-Sawyer is 8-5 overall.
Sophomore Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) smashed 12
kills and freshman Shannon Vaughn (Farmington,
N.H.) added nine kills for PSU in the victory over UMD.
Freshman Allie Jones (Canton, Mass.) chipped in
with eight kills and junior libero Alex Avery
(Milton, N.H./Nute) recorded a team-high 13 digs. Junior
Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, Mass.) led the Corsairs with seven kills
while senior Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, Conn.) added five kills and
junior Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, R.I.) contributed three
blocks.
UMD won sets one and three against Colby-Sawyer only to see the
Chargers come back and win the even-numbered sets before the
Corsairs pulled it out in the fifth and decisive set.
Mastrocola finished with 17 kills, 13 digs and four blocks for UMD
in the victory, and Tsaparakis added 10 kills. Junior libero
Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded a team-high 18
digs. Senior Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) paced the
Chargers with 19 kills and 14 digs, while classmate Stef Turner
(Boxborough, Mass.) chipped in with 12 kills and six blocks.
Freshman Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) registered a team-high 38
digs, and junior Kristin Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.) contributed 40 set
assists.
Doody came back with 26 kills to lead Colby-Sawyer past Plymouth
State in the finale of the day. Turner added 12 kills and two
blocks, while freshman Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.) made five
blocks. Stoodley recorded another double-double for PSU with
15 kills and 11 digs, while Jones finished with 11 kills and
freshman Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.)
contributed four blocks.
PSU is back in action next weekend at the Johnson & Wales
Invitational in Providence, R.I. UMass Dartmouth will host
Lasell College on Tuesday at 7:00 pm. before competing in the
Johnson & Wales Invitational, and Colby-Sawyer returns home to
host Middlebury Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
