Panthers defeat Norwich and Plattsburgh
State
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Plymouth State
University women's volleyball team opened the 2010 season
with a pair of victories Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to
defeat host Norwich University in the first match, 3-2, and
sweeping Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) in the second, 3-0.
The Panthers fell behind Norwich to start the day, dropping the
first two sets, 25-20 and 25-17. The team regrouped, and came
back to win the next two sets, 25-10 and 25-18, and overcame a
tough Norwich team to pull out the fifth and decisive set,
16-14. PSU kept the momentum going against Plattsburgh,
winning the match by scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-20.
Sophomore transfer Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.)
made a big impact on her first day in a Panther uniform. She
recorded a double-double in her first match with 12 kills and 16
digs in the win over Norwich, along with five service aces.
She also topped the Panthers with seven kills in the victory over
Plattsburgh.
Junior Meghan Sullivan (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee)
was also a strong contributor against Norwich with 11 kills, while
classmate Elissa Morin (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North)
added nine kills. Sullivan also added six kills against
Plattsburgh.
Junior Alex Avery (Milton, N.H./Nute) and senior
Kelsey Petty (Salem, N.H.) led the Panthers
defensively with 15 and 14 total digs, respectively, while freshman
Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) made four blocks in each
match. Junior setter Sarah Cady (Holliston,
Mass.) recorded 34 assists against Norwich and 29 vs.
Plattsburgh.
PSU is right back into action Sunday afternoon with a pair of
matches at Colby-Sawyer College, facing the host Chargers and the
University of Minnesota-Morris.
