Box Score Welch scores lone goal for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University
and Salem State University battled back and forth for 110 minutes
Wednesday afternoon and had to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime
draw in non-conference men's soccer action at Panther
Field.
The two goals came about six minutes apart midway through the
second half. PSU senior Stefan Welch (Tokyo,
Japan/Yakota) took the ball on the right side after a header pass
from teammate Dre Cabral (Tokyo, Japan) and
knocked the ball into the left side of the net to give the home
team the lead at the 59:40 mark. The visitors countered about
six minutes later when junior Owen Quane (Weymouth, Mass.) made a
nice centering pass from the right end line to classmate Rafael
Santos (East Boston, Mass.), who deposited the ball into the
left-hand side of the goal to deadlock the match at 1-1.
Both teams had several scoring opportunities but could not
capitalize as Plymouth State finished with a 20-15 advantage in
shots. Sophomore Joakim Martinsson
(Morlunda, Sweden) nearly scored for PSU on a corner kick in the
70th minute but his header went over the top of the
goal, and Cabral did the same thing for the Panthers a minute into
the second overtime.
Sophomore Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden)
finished with six saves for the home team while sophomore Scott
Hall (Waltham, Mass.) stopped seven shots for the Vikings.
PSU, 1-1-1, is home again on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. match against
Bridgewater State. Salem State, 0-1-2, returns to
Massachusetts to play its home opener next Wednesday, Sept. 15, vs.
UMass Dartmouth (7:00 p.m.)
