Brodeur and Samaro lead Panthers past Bears
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Nicole
Brodeur (Claremont, N.H.) and sophomore Jennifer
Samaro (Salem, N.H.) each captured three individual events
and swam on a winning relay team Saturday afternoon as Plymouth
State University defeated Bridgewater State University, 145-122, in
a women's swimming and diving meet at the PSU Natatorium.
Brodeur took first place in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of
59.42 seconds, while also finishing on top in the 100- and 200-yard
butterfly events in 1:05.48 and 2:30.25, respectively. Samaro
touched the wall first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke
(1:15.78 and 2:42.63, respectively) as well as the 200-yard
individual medley (2:26.44).
Freshman Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.) was a
double-winner for the home team, taking first in the 50-yard
freestyle (28.3 seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (2:13.28).
PSU also won both relay races, with junior Brittney
Gondek (South Glastonbury, Conn.), Samaro, senior
Lindsey Graham (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore
Amy Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) swimming the fastest
in the 200-yard medley relay (2:03.10), and Brodeur, Foley, junior
Brittany Shortell (Ansonia, Conn.) and Gondek
cruising to a victory in the 400-yard free relay (4:06.37).
The visiting Bears were led by sophomore Loren Phinney (Holbrook,
Mass.), who was a winner in three individual events. She
touched the wall first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke (1:04.99
and 2:21.81) as well as the 500-yard freestyle (5:43.23).
Classmate Bridget Hasson (Milton, Mass.) also finished first for
the Bears in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:16.37).
The two teams split the diving events, with PSU freshman
Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.) winning the
one-meter (167.90) and BSU freshman Samantha Capone (Dracut, Mass.)
taking the three-meter (153.10).
PSU, 3-3 overall, is on the road Wednesday with a dual meet at
Western Connecticut State University, while BSU, 1-9, hosts
Westfield State University next Saturday.
