PSU Women's Tennis too strong for RIC

Four Panthers win two matches each

            PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four Plymouth State University players were double-winners Saturday afternoon as the Panthers defeated Rhode Island College, 8-1, in a Little East Conference women's tennis match at the RIC Tennis Courts.

            Junior Sara Burke led the way for PSU, winning in straight sets at No. 1 singles and pairing up with sophomore Molly Heartfield for a victory in the No. 1 doubles slot. Burke has won three straight singles matches to improve to 5-3 on the season.

            Seniors Lydia Smith and Megan Cooper and junior Elizabeth Silsby were the other Panthers to finish with a pair of wins on the afternoon.  Smith won at No. 2 singles and Cooper at No. 5 after they had teamed up for a triumph at No. 2 doubles; Silsby won her singles match at No. 4 and joined forces with sophomore Jane Duggan at No. 3 doubles.

            Sophomore Cheyenne Lessard won her match for PSU at No. 6 singles, improving her record to 5-2 on the season to match Burke for the team lead.  Junior Doris Belanger (West Warwick, RI) earned her team-leading fifth win of the season for RIC at No. 3 singles.

            Plymouth State, 5-3 and 2-3 in LEC matches, plays an LEC make-up contest Sunday at Western Connecticut State University.  RIC hosts Emmanuel on Tuesday.
