Panthers even LEC mark, improve to 6-3 overall

            WILTON, Conn. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team won its second Little East Conference match of the weekend Sunday afternoon, sweeping Western Connecticut State University, 9-0, in a make-up match at the Four Seasons Racquet Club.

            The Panthers, who defeated Rhode Island College Saturday, 8-1, won again Sunday to even their LEC mark at 3-3 and improve their overall record to 6-3.  The six victories match last year's win total (6-7), which was the most in a season since 2006.  WestConn is winless at 0-6 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

            Junior Sara Burke continued her standout play for PSU at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.  She won her fourth straight singles match (6-0, 6-0) to improve her record to 6-3 on the season, including a 5-1 mark against LEC opponents.  Burke and sophomore Molly Heartfield won their No. 1 doubles match to even their mark at 4-4, and Heartfield was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles.

            Senior Lydia Smith, junior Elizabeth Silsby and sophomore Jane Duggan were also double-winners for the Panthers.  Smith won at No. 2 singles and with senior Megan Cooper at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Cheyenne Lessard won at No. 6 singles to up her season record to 6-2.

            PSU is back on the court Wednesday with a non-conference road match at Endicott College.
