Box Score Eriksen provides highlights for Panthers
WATERVILLE, Maine – John Jennings (Danvers,
Mass.), Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.), and Mark Squicciarino
(Titusville, N.J.) all had five points on the day as the Colby
College men's lacrosse team moved to 2-0 on the young season
with a 13-3 non-conference win over Plymouth State University
Thursday at Bill Alfond Field.
Jennings finished with four goals and one assist, while Deveau and
Squicciarino both had two goals and three assists. Deveau leads the
team in scoring after two games with three goals and six assists
for nine points. Squicciarino has four goals and four assists,
while Jennings has a team-best six goals and one assist.
Craig Bunker (Topsfield, Mass.) and Bjorn Knutson (Bloomington,
Minn.) dominated the face-off chances to give Colby numerous
possessions. Bunker, who was third in the country in face-off
percentage last year, was 12-for-14 and finished with a game-high
11 groundballs. Knutson won all four of his chances and added three
groundballs.
With the Mules up 2-1, Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.) scored with
27 seconds left in the first period for a 3-1 edge at the break.
Plymouth State, though, made it 3-2 when Andrew
Eriksen (Beverly, Mass.) tallied 1:52 into the second
quarter. Colby scored six straight goals --- three of them by
Jennings --- to pull away for a 9-2 halftime lead. Eriksen scored
again to start the third quarter, but Colby kept the Panthers off
the scoreboard the rest of the way.
McKillop added two goals and one assist for Colby. The Mules also
received goals from Scott Margolis (New York, N.Y.), Keith
Fairbrother (Madison, N.J.), and the first collegiate goal by James
Wyse (Newton, Mass.). John Moriarty (Winchester, Mass) dished a
pair of assists.
Freshman Zach Frank (Wakefield, Mass.) had the
other goal for Plymouth State. Paul McInerney
(Scituate, Mass.) led Plymouth State with five groundballs and
Devon Smith (Plattekill, N.Y.) won three.
Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) played the first three quarters in
goal for the Mules and made three stops. Patrick Gilligan (Edina,
Minn.) and Tyler Cash (Middleton, Mass.) combined for four saves in
the fourth quarter for the Mules.
Colby heads into its spring break trip with a huge test at
top-ranked and defending national champion Tufts University on
Saturday at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Plymouth State (1-1) heads to
Castleton State for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.
