PSU Women's Tennis gets past Castleton

Smith, Cooper, and Silsby all double winners for Panthers

            RUTLAND, Vt. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team posted a key non-conference road victory Wednesday afternoon, defeating Castleton State College, 6-3 in a match held at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.

            PSU won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches. The Panthers improve to 2-1 on the season while Castleton drops to 2-2.

            The Panthers were led by the group of seniors Lydia Smith and Megan Cooper and junior Elizabeth Silsby, who posted tough wins in both singles and doubles.  Smith won a tight match at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 7-5, while Cooper won in three sets (6-4 in the third) at No. 4 and Silsby was victorious in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 5.  Smith and Silsbury also teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles, and Cooper paired up with sophomore Jane Duggan for a victory at No. 3 doubles.

            Also winning a match for PSU was sophomore Cheyenne Lessard at No. 6 singles.

            The Spartans were led by Michelle Podnecky, who won the match at No. 1 singles and teamed with Kate Bucci for a win at No. 1 doubles. Brittni Racine also won for Castleton at No. 3 singles.

            PSU returns to Llittle East Conference action Saturday with a visit to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a 1:00 p.m. match.
