UMD edges PSU Women's Tennis on tiebreaker

Box Score

Burke wins twice for Panthers

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – With darkness quickly approaching and the teams tied at 4-4 in their Little East Conference match Saturday evening, the women's tennis coaches at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University decided to settle the number six singles match in a super-tiebreaker at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.

Junior Liz Girczyc stepped up for the Corsairs and pulled out a 10-4 victory over PSU sophomore Cheyenne Lessard, giving the Corsairs a 5-4 victory. Girczyc and Lessard had split the first two sets of their match.

The Corsairs led 2-1 after doubles and the match was tied 3-3 after the first three singles results were in.  The teams traded wins in the next two matches, setting the stage for Girczyc's dramatic victory.

The Panthers got a strong performance from junior Sara Burke, who won matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with partner Molly Heartfield. Seniors Lydia Smith and Megan Cooper also posted singles wins at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.

UMass Dartmouth, 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little East, will return to action Tuesday with a visit to Rhode Island College. PSU, 2-2 and 1-2, travels to Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday.
