Salem State defeats PSU Women's Tennis

Burke and Heartfield win in singles for Panthers 

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Salem State College swept the doubles matches and took four of six in singles Tuesday afternoon to defeat Plymouth State University, 7-2, in a Little East Conference women's tennis match at the P.E. Center Courts.

            The Vikings remained undefeated on the season, improving to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in LEC matches.  Leading the way for the visitors was senior Lauren Turenne, who remained unbeaten at No. 2 singles (5-0) with a straight-set victory and teamed up with junior Michelle McEwen for an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles.

            PSU (4-3 overall, 1-3 LEC) picked up its two points with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.  Junior Sara Burke improved her record to 4-3 on the season at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over McEwen, and sophomore Molly Heartfield posted a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 3 in the final match on the court.

            Senior Carly Muniz and sophomore Melissa Govertsen also collected two wins apiece for Salem State, earning decisions at Nos. 4 and 5 singles after outlasting PSU's tandem of senior Lydia Smith and junior Elizabeth Silsby in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, 9-8 (12-10).  Also posting wins for the Vikings were junior Jessica Spinale at No. 6 singles, and senior Patty Quartararo and junior Anna Yaskell at No. 3 doubles.

            Plymouth State plays its next four matches on the road, beginning this weekend with a trip to Rhode Island College Saturday and Western Connecticut State University Sunday for a pair of LEC matches.  Salem State plays another LEC match Thursday at Worcester State.
