Box Score

Panthers improve to 5-0, remain unbeaten in conference

BOSTON, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team used a 3-0 sweep of doubles play to cruise to a 9-0 victory over UMass Boston Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference women's tennis match at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.

The Panthers(5-0, 2-0 Little East)  have now five in a row to start the season, including four matches by 9-0 scores, after missing out on the Little East Tournament a year ago because of a season-ending loss to the Beacons.

Plymouth State opened the match with an 8-0 victory at second doubles, as junior Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) and sophomore Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.) improved to 5-0 on the season. The Panthers' sister duo of Zara and Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) made it 2-0 with an 8-3 win over UMass Boston's top-flight doubles pair, also improving their record to 5-0.

In the closest match of the afternoon, freshman Cassidy Wells (Colchester, Vt.) and senior Rosalie DiRado (Gansevoort, N.Y.) barely held off Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) and Woytowicz 9-7 in third doubles action.

PSU put the match away by sweeping the six singles matches.  Zara Jakubas at #1, Wells at #3, Ioannides at #5 and DiRado at #5 all improved to 5-0 on the season, while Sunny Jakubas at #2 and Lund at #4 are both 4-1.

UMass Boston will have a few days off, before returning to action next Saturday at Rhode Island College. PSU plays a non-conference match Wednesday at Lyndon State.
