PSU Women's Tennis defeats Franklin Pierce

Jakubas and Ireme lead Panthers to non-conference win

            RINDGE, N.H. – Senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) and freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) were each double-winners Thursday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Franklin Pierce University, 7-2, in non-conference women's tennis action.

            PSU has won six of its last seven matches to improve to 7-5 overall, while the Ravens complete their fall season at 1-13.

            Jakubas and Ireme teamed up to capture the No. 1 doubles match by an 8-6 score, and then each won their singles match in straight sets, Jakubas 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 slot and Ireme 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Jakubas improved her season record to 9-1 and her career mark to 23-1, while Ireme evened her season record at 6-6.

            Plymouth State took two of the three doubles matches. In addition to Jakubas and Ireme, freshman Kelley Corson (Exeter, N.H.) and senior Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany) won their match, 9-7, to give PSU a 2-1 lead.

            The Panthers closed out the match with wins in five of the six singles encounters. Sophomore Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.), junior Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) and sophomore Megan Wallace (Moultonborough, N.H.) all finished off their Raven opponents in the process. Sunny Jakubas is matching her sister's totals, as she improved to 9-1 in singles this season and 22-2 in her career.

            Plymouth State wraps up the regular season Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with a Little East Conference match at Worcester State University.
