PSU Men's Ice Hockey too much for Salem State

Wigg, McGilvrey, Ceasar lead Panthers to key conference victory

            SALEM, Mass. – Senior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, N.S.) tallied a goal and two assists and junior Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.) collected three assists Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Salem State University, 5-2, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's ice hockey game at Rockett Arena.

            The Vikings out-shot the Panthers 38-30, but PSU led 1-0 after one period, 3-0 after two and 5-0 in the third before Salem State tacked on a pair of goals. Plymouth State improves to 3-1 on the season, 2-0 in MASCAC games, while Salem drops to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

            Senior goalie Gordon Ceasar (Oak Park, Calif.) remained undefeated on the season (3-0-0), making 36 saves, including double-digit stops in all three periods.

            Junior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) put the Panthers on the board with his first goal of the season on a power play seven minutes into the game. Wigg played a part in both Panther goals in the second period, setting up junior Josh Woody (Sunderland, Md.) for his second of the season at 9:17, and the scoring his second of the year five minutes later.

            Sophomore Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) needed just 47 seconds of the third period to extend PSU's lead to 4-0 with his second of the year, and freshman Colby Lanceleve (Stewiacke, N.S.) made it 5-0 with his team-leading third goal of the year at 6:58.

            Salem State finally got on the board on a goal by Michael Casale with 9:38 remaining in the game, and Brandon Platt pulled the Vikings a goal closer with his second of the year with four minutes to play.

            Plymouth State returns to Hanaway Rink on Thursday for a MASCAC encounter with Framingham State University (6:00 p.m.). Salem State hosts Fitchburg State University Thursday at 7 p.m.
