PSU Women's Tennis defeats Salem State

Panthers down Vikings in only match of spring

            SALEM, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team won four of six singles matches and claimed a 6-3 victory over Salem State University Saturday afternoon in PSU's only match of the spring at Salem's Rockett Arena.

            PSU took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins in the first and third flights, and then won in singles at #2, #3, #5 and #6 to take the match. Both schools play the majority of their seasons in the fall, but each has some spring dates. The Panthers up their overall record to 8-7, and Salem State falls to 3-11.

PSU HIGHLIGHTS

* Sophomore Irene Kigugin (Concord, N.H.) and senior Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) were double-winners at the top of the Panther line-up. They paired together to win at No. 1 doubles, and won their singles matches in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3.

* The Panthers' oother win in doubles was by sophomores Kelley Corson (Exeter, N.H.) and Lily O'Connor (Salem, N.H.) at No. 3.

* Also picking up wins in singles for PSU was freshman Alex Dunn (Jaffrey, N.H.) at No. 5, and freshman Sydney Welch (Brockport, N.Y.) at No. 6.

* PSU had defeated Salem State last fall, 5-3.
