Box Score

Panthers turn sights to WestConn on Saturday

KEENE, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team played rival Keene State College to a scoreless tie through the first 52 minutes, but the Owls erupted with three second half goals to notch a 3-0 win in a Little East Conference (LEC) match at the Owl Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.

Keene State held a 6-2 advantage in shots over the first half, but junior Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) kept the game scoreless. Keene State took the lead on a header off a corner kick in the 53rd minute, then added insurance goals in the 69th and 83rd minutes to secure the win.

Plymouth State falls to 1-7-3 overall and 0-3-2 in the LEC, while the Owls move to 9-5-0 and 3-2-0 in conference action.

            The Basics:

Plymouth State 0, Keene State 3

            Plymouth State (1-7-3, 0-3-2 LEC)

            Keene State (9-5-0, 3-2-0 LEC)

            How it Happened:

  • After a scoreless first half the Owls struck first junior Yusufu Juma (Kindu, Congo) headed in a corner off the foot of classmate Emmanuel Smith (Concord, N.H.) in the 53rd minute.
  • Smith made it 2-0 after receiving a through ball from sophomore Benny Tamzarian (Manchester, N.H.) in the 69th minute.
  • Tamzarian capped the scoring in the 83rd minute when he finished at the net after a shot deflected off a Plymouth State defender.

            Inside the Numbers:

  • Sophomores Ryan Brown (Milton, Vt.) and Teddy McLaughlin (Wakefield, R.I.) led the Panthers with three shots apiece.
  • Lindeberg made two saves, while his counterpart, sophomore Gavin Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H.) stopped three shots.
  • PSU held a 7-6 advantage in shots in the second half, while Keene owned a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game.

            Straight From the Coach's Mouth:

"We're incredibly disappointed," said head coach Rob Wright. "To lose the game was tough, but by a score line that didn't reflect the game is very hard to take. Tactically we played the game we wanted, made the better chances and prevented them from creating any dangerous chances, but we have to accept that if you make inexplicable individual slip ups at this level you get punished."

            Up Next:

  • PSU hosts WestConn for another LEC contest on Saturday (Oct. 19) morning (11:00 a.m.).
