PSU Women's Tennis sinks Salem State

Panthers roll in dominant effort 

            SALEM, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's tennis team got contributions up and down the lineup on the way to a decisive 8-1 win over Salem State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) match Saturday afternoon at the Central Campus Courts.

            PSU got off to a hot start, sweeping the doubles action and earned five straight wins in singles play for a commanding 8-0 lead, before the Vikings earned their lone point with a win at No. 1 singles.

            Plymouth State improves to 3-1 (2-0 LEC), while Salem State drops to 1-1 (1-1 LEC).

            How it Happened.

  • Plymouth State was in control from the onset. Juniors Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.) and Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) started the day off on the right foot with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
  • The freshman team of Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) and Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2, and juniors Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and Sage Winter (New Castle, N.H.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 1.
  • Freshman Hanna Street (New Castle, N.H.) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, with McCarthy (No. 2), K. Winter (No. 3), Marshall (No. 4) and Venincasa (No. 5) also posting straight set wins for an 8-0 advantage.

 

            Inside the Numbers:

  • Following the completion of doubles play, rain forced the remainder of the match to be played indoors.
  • PSU improves to 3-0 against Division III schools this fall and has won 13-of-14 in division matches dating back to last season.

 

            Straight from the Coach's Mouth:

             "We played unbelievable doubles on all three courts," said head coach Barbara Rawlsky-Willett. "Singles play was also good today as each player found a plan and stuck to it. It was a good day all around for the team."

 

            Up Next:

  • The Panthers kick off a busy week with a home match against Northern Vermont – Johnson on Monday (Sept. 16) at 4:00 p.m. at the Holderness School Courts.
