WTEN: Panthers blank Castleton for 10th win

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University put together a complete match up and down the lineup to roll to a 9-0 win over Castleton University in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis match at the Holderness School Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Panthers rolled through doubles play for an early 3-0 lead, before sweeping the singles action for another conference win. Sophomore Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) preserved the shutout with a lengthy 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) win at No. 6 singles.
 
Plymouth State improves to 10-2 (6-1 LEC), reaching double-digit wins for the fourth time in five years, while Castleton dips to 5-8 and 1-6 in the LEC.

How it Happened:
  • Juniors Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) got things started with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while the freshman tandem of Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) extended an impressive rookie campaign with an 8-1 win at No. 3.
  • Senior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) joined forces with Puzio to breeze to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
  • Winter marched to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Marshall, LaBarre and Cardoso all cruised to 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.
  • Miller earned a strong 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4, and Puzio completed the sweep by overcoming a grueling first set 6-7 (5-7), to win 6-2 and take the third set super tiebreaker by a 10-5 margin.
By the Numbers:
  • LaBarre became the first player to reach ten singles wins this year, improving to 10-2. She's a perfect 6-0 at No. 3.
  • Cardoso (8-2) and Miller (8-3) are tied with the second most singles wins, with Cardoso going a combined 7-0 when playing No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5.
  • LaBarre and Cardoso are an impressive 7-1 as a duo, while Miller and Puzio have gone 6-2 as a pairs team.
  • PSU has won eight straight and 12-of-13 against the Spartans.
