WSOC: Meier strikes again as Panthers topple RIC

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Jordan Meier (Holderness, N.H.) scored for the fourth straight game and classmate Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) picked up her third shutout as Plymouth State University toppled Rhode Island College, 2-0, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer game at Arold Field during Homecoming Weekend on Saturday.

Meier gave the Panthers a first half lead, then assisted on sophomore Ashley Plante's (Concord, N.H.) second half insurance tally as PSU picked up the win. Register posted her third straight shutout of the year to improve to 3-0-0.

With the win Plymouth State runs its record to 5-2-1 and moves to 2-1-1 in the Little East, while Rhode Island College falls to 2-9-0 (1-3-0 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, Rhode Island College 0
    • Plymouth State (5-2-1, 2-1-1 LEC)
    • Rhode Island College (2-9-0, 1-3-0 LEC)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Meier got the Panthers on the board in the 28th minute when she stole the ball from a RIC defender and chipped a left-footed shot over the goalkeeper's head to the back corner from 25 yards out.
  • Plymouth State had a chance to double the lead when sophomore Emma Simkewicz (Westminster, Mass.) sent a ball toward the box from midfield for junior Alanna Joyce (Windham, Maine), but the Anchorwomen's goalie beat Joyce to the ball.
  • Sophomore Brianna Chaffee (Exeter, R.I.) helped the Panthers push the advantage to 2-0 midway through the second half. Chaffee carried the ball across midfield on the left side before sending a pass over the top. Meier and the RIC goalkeeper converged on the ball just outside the 18, with Meier making a touch around her before centering the ball to Plante for the insurance goal.
  • RIC's best chance came minutes later when a collision in the PSU box left freshman Serena Forte (Hope, R.I.) with a clear shot, but her bid hit the right post and the Panthers were able to clear.
By the Numbers:
  • While the Panthers shot advantage was a narrow 11-10, seven of PSU's shots were on goal compared to just three for the Anchorwomen.
  • Plymouth State had three corner kicks, while RIC had two.
  • Meier extends her goal-scoring streak to four straight games and now owns the outright team-lead with five on the season.
  • Plate's goal was her second of the year.
  • Register has posted shutouts in all three of her starts this fall.
  • PSU has won four straight and nine-of-ten against the Anchorwomen.
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State hosts Nichols College on Tuesday (Oct. 5) for a Senior Day clash with the Bison. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
