PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore
Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) made ten saves, but Eastern Connecticut State University topped Plymouth State University, 3-0, in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer game at Arold Field on Saturday afternoon.
Cornejo was tested early and often by the Warriors' offense and the visitors got on the board on a header off a corner kick in the 28th minute. ECSU struck quickly with back-to-back scores in the opening two minutes of the second half and Plymouth State was unable to rally.
Plymouth State dips to 3-10-0 and 1-7-0 in the LEC, while Eastern Connecticut improves to 9-6-0 (5-1-0 LEC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, Eastern Connecticut St. 3
- Plymouth State (3-10-0, 1-7-0 LEC)
- Eastern Connecticut St. (9-6-0, 5-1-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
- ECSU came out aggressive with a shot in the opening minute and Cornejo was tested four times within the first 24 minutes of game play. The Warriors got on the board in the 28th minute when junior Andres Mayuri (West Hartford, Conn.) delivered a corner that senior Will Toomey (Willington, Conn.) headed into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
- Cornejo made another three saves to keep the Panthers close.
- Plymouth State nearly drew even in the 42nd minute when freshman Sondre Asheim (Klepp, Norway) flicked a pass to sophomore Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) alone in front. The ECSU keeper sprawled to save Abdallah's blast from 10-yards out, then recovered in time to turn aside Asheim's chance at the rebound and the score remained 1-0 into the break.
- A turnover in the defensive end led to Eastern Connecticut's goal in the 46th minute as the visitors doubled the lead and the Warriors would strike again just a minute later.
- Asheim played a deep ball over the top on target and sophomore Sean Kern (Rockport, Mass.) nearly got a head on it, but the ECSU keeper grabbed the ball out of the air and PSU was unable to get any closer.
By the Numbers:
- Eastern Connecticut sits in a three-way tie for second in the league.
- Cornejo's 10 saves were one shy of his career best, a mark he's reached twice this season.
- Asheim and Abdallah each fired two shots on target.
- ECSU has won each of the last three meetings, with the previous two decided by 2-1 margins.
